The much anticipated new Pastor’s House DVD is finally ready! We’ve been working on this project for several months now. Post production took a little longer than we thought it would, but the extra time was well worth it.

The new DVD is called The Pastor’s House Father-Child Projects Volume 1. It is hopefully the first in a series of DVDs designed to help fathers build strong relationships with their children. This is accomplished by building fun, useful projects together that are easy to build. We’ve designed the projects so you can do them in a few hours using standard tools most guys have in their garage or workshop.

What kind of projects? On the first DVD Pastor Ken and his six year old son Thomas show you how to build a three-hole washers game and marshmallow blowguns. We even include a Bible lesson that relates to the project.

I had planned on posting yesterday but got busy putting together a sneak preview of our upcoming release of The Pastor’s House Father-Child Projects DVD. I’m so excited about this project and how it is all coming together. We finished principle photography and are now in post production. We hope to release the DVD soon. This is going to make a great Father’s Day gift!

The whole idea behind this series of Pastor’s House episodes is to help fathers build lasting relationships with their children. We dads have such limited time to spend with our children that we need to be deliberate and make the most of the short amount of time we get to spend with them.

The Pastor’s House Father-Child Projects series helps families build relationships and fond memories by building projects together. Each Father-Child Projects episode will contain several easy to build projects or great activities the whole family can participate in. We’ve designed the projects so they can be built using common tools that most dads have in their garage or work shop.

In His Steps

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any updates on In His Steps, and I wish I had something better to post. Due to a lack of sufficient funding, and other circumstances beyond our control, we are postponing the production of the film indefinitely. We have come to believe that perhaps this was not the Lord’s timing for this project, and will be pursuing other projects on a much smaller scale for the near future.

It's been a while since I've posted an update. There hasn't been too much to report. Storyboarding has begun in earnest and is coming along slowly but steadily. We went location scouting on the 5th of March and have some leads on more locations.

Other than that, things have been pretty quiet. Casting has been put on hold as we work out details with the actors we've selected thus far. Once everything's squared away, we'll be reopening auditions for the remaining roles.

Philip Hurn Will D.P. In His Steps

Lawrence Multimedia, Inc.’s upcoming feature length adaptation of the book In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon will be shot on the Red One Digital Cinema camera. The Red One (www.red.com) is the next generation digital video camera capable of shooting at 2K and 4K resolutions, the equivalent of 16mm and 35mm film. “RED delivers unmatched image quality with no recording system limitations,” states the official Red website. The first Red One cameras were released in August 2007.

“We are extremely grateful to the Lord for providing this opportunity to use such state-of-the-art technology,” writer/director Zachary Lawrence said. “With Philip Hurn as D.P., we’re confident that this film will be well-made and bring glory to God.”

Philip Hurn, (www.PhilipHurn.com) a three-time Emmy Award winner who has served as Director of Photography on such films as Time Changer, The Moment After and Unidentified, has signed on as Director of Photography for In His Steps, and will be providing the use of his Red One camera for the shoot.

Lawrence Multimedia, Inc. is now accepting applications for cast and crew for this independent film production. Principal Photography will take place July 14 to August 15, 2008 in and around Montrose, CO. Those interested in applying can find all the details on the website.

Last Friday, we went to the Museum of the Mountain West in Montrose to work on the building we'll be using for the White Cross Mission location. Our task was to move 10 large bookshelves, a massive furnace, and other materials downstairs to the basement.

Well, I finally heard from Vision Forum concerning my trailer and treatment that were entered into the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival. While the treatment did not make it into the semifinals, our trailer, Transforming Culture, did! It will play at least once during the festival. From what I've seen of other entries, competition is going to be tough this year. (Not that it wasn't last year! :-P) I'll see you in San Antonio!

In His Steps Update - Shooting Postponed

Update on In His Steps:

We are striving to produce the most God honoring feature film we possibly can. We have come to the realization that our shooting schedule was, at best, very ambitious, and most likely unrealistic. We also realized that it is not feasible to ask so many people to give of their time without any compensation.

We have decided to delay the shoot of In His Steps until the July-August 2008 time frame. This will allow us to do many things better to help us do a more professional job with this production.

One of the major things we hope to accomplish with this schedule delay is the raising of more funds. We will be mounting a fund raising campaign which will provide a budget to do things right, including paying for major crew members and paying something (still to be determined) to the main character actors.

We are in the process of reworking our budget and will be forming an LLC for this production and seeking investors soon. Watch for more details to come soon.

Composer Selected for In His Steps!

Amity Sampley has been composing music pieces for the past ten years and in the last three years has gotten into orchestration. She has composed and orchestrated music for several
short films including, Hero Dad and the Incredible Cave Rescue, Dear Mama, Theodore and Fink and Vagabundo. She has also composed and orchestrated the music score for a local bank TV and radio commercial.
She gives all praise and honor to God Who Helps her in making music!

Lawrence Multimedia, Inc. will be shooting its first feature-length movie this November based on the novel In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon. (www.InHisStepsTheMovie.com) Shooting will take place between November 1 – 21, 2007 in and around Norwood, Montrose and Telluride, Colorado.

We are now holding auditions for all roles in the film, and are taking applications for the crew!

In His Steps Update

God is so awesome!

As my family and I went to spend the day at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison on the 20^th, we passed the Museum of the Mountain West (http://www.mountainwestmuseum.com/index.html) . One of their historic buildings caught our attention as we drove by, so we went in to check it out. Long story short, we now have our White Cross Mission location for In His Steps! The building was a German Lutheran church built in 1913, and was relocated to the museum from Park Avenue in Montrose, CO.

This was completely unexpected! We were just having a family vacation day, and the Lord practically dropped this amazing location into our laps out of the blue. It needs some work cleaning up, but that’s easier done than said. Praise God for His provision!

I just ordered the first set of DVDs of The Courtship Formula from the manufacturer. We'll be including it in our store soon!

I would also highly recommend Kunaki for DVD manufacturing. You can custom design the case, disc label and a one-page insert using a really nifty program that you download from them (for free.), or you can use one of their templates.
Once the packaging is designed, you upload the DVD content to them (they walk you through the entire process), and then you can order as many as you want. They also will send you a free copy for you to review before you invest any money with them. I did that, since this is the first time we've used them, and I was VERY impressed with the finished product.
Once you're satisfied, you can order as many discs as you want, and all for the same price of $1.60 per disc (If you order 1,000 the price is $1.20/disc). There's a $3.00 handling fee on all orders, plus shipping.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. They also provide you with a UPC bar code, so if you design your own case, make sure you leave room for that. They also shrink-wrap the cases.

There, now that plug is over with. :-P I'll let you all know when we're ready to start taking orders.

No, this isn't to announce the DVD release, although that will be coming soon. This is actually to let y'all know that I received a letter from the Estes Park Film Festival yesterday. Here's what it said:

Dear Zachary,

On behalf of the Estes Park Film Festival we would like to thank you for submitting your film "The Courtship Formula" for consideration for the 2007 Festival. We regret to inform you that your film was not selected for the festival. Unfortunately, we received so many great film submissions that not all of them could be included in the festival.

We really did enjoy your film and wanted to include it, but unfortunately we like a lot more films than we are able to accept. We thank you again for taking the time and resources to submit your film. Although your work was not selected this time, we remain interested in your future projects. Our very best wishes to you on your future endeavors. Please keep in touch.

So, one festival down, three to go. I'm not disappointed about not making it into this one, though. I was prepared for it. :-P Ah well, we'll see how it goes with the other festivals.

Update on "The Courtship Formula," and our next project

Well, the editing of the video for The Courtship Formula is completed, and my Dad is now working on cleaning up the audio. It's so awesome to see the project drawing to completion. God has been so good throughout the production, He gets ALL the glory and honor for this. ^_^

While Dad's been working on the audio, I've started my next project for the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival: the first of three trailers that I plan on submitting. This one is being tentatively titled Transformers of Culture and involves one shot of fairly complex CGI that I'm building the models for using Animation:Master v.12. I'll put some screen shots up in a future post.

What else does Lawrence Multimedia have in store? I've finished writing the fourth draft of a script for our first feature-length movie. For the time being, the title and story are hush-hush, but I'm letting a select few critique the script. Progress Report

As of now, I have a full-length rough cut put together, and it looks like the final run time will be around 50 minutes, a comfortable 5 minutes under the SAICFF limit. The keying still needs some tweaking on a few of the shots, and then my dad will be working on the audio (boosting levels, sweetening it, de-hissing, etc.). Then music, a few more final reviews, any last minute tweaks and it's done! Barring any catastrophic technical glitches, The Courtship Formula should be completed by the end of next week, or the early part of the week after at the latest.

I'm planning on entering it into a couple other film festivals as well. Please keep the project in your prayers as we come close to the deadlines. ^_^

The Courtship Formula Update! Keying Begun!

Today I began keying the greenscreen footage we shot Monday night/Tuesday morning.
"What is keying?" you ask? "Keying" is short for "chromakeying," the process of removing the greenscreen from the video and replacing it with whatever new background is needed for the project. (This process is also called "compositing.")

I'll give a little overview of how I'm going about doing this. I'm using two different pieces of software: Adobe After Effects 7 Proffesional and Serious Magic's (actually, also Adobe's now) Ultra 2.

After Effects is one of the most powerful graphics editing programs available. It's used by everyone from hobbyists to Hollywood pros. I've used it in various incarnations for about four years, and I've barely scratched the surface of what it can do.
Ultra 2 is my second-most favorite program (after Adobe Premiere Pro) for video editing tasks. Its greenscreen capabilities are virtually unrivaled by any other compositing software that I know of.

...Or at least, it is if your greenscreen is properly lit. >_< There's a lot of digital "noise" on the greenscreen in the footage we shot. Even Ultra's awesome powers can't get a clean key out of it.

That's where After Effects comes in. ^_^ I've never been too impressed with AE's keying capabilities, but then, I always had Ultra to use. Even if I couldn't get a perfect key out of the footage, it was at least acceptable. Well, I couldn't even get an acceptable key out of this stuff! I was devastated. I thought, "I'm going to have to tear the living room apart again and reshoot this!" But the Lord is faithful. After a lot of praying, and talking with my dad, I went into After Effects and fiddled with it's various Keying effects. Lo and behold, using a combination of Color Range, Spill Suppression, Matte Choking and the Eraser tool, I went from this:

As they say, "There was much rejoicing." ^_^

One of the things that's really neat about Ultra, is that it comes with over a dozen different "Virtual Sets" that you can use in your productions. We used one of these in our Welcome Home Antelope Valley real estate show back in 2006. I'll be using a Virtual Set in The Courtship Formula. If everything turns out the way it should, people should be asking either "Where did they shoot that?" or "Did they greenscreen that? Wow!" ;-) Here's a semi-finished clip in Ultra:

So, score one for After Effects and the power of prayer! Even if The Courtship Formula doesn't make it into SAICFF, I'm sure God's going to use this to bless someone. I just have to make sure I keep my priorities straight concerning this project. Like everything else we do, this belongs to God for Him to use however He wants for His glory.

"The Courtship Formula" Production photos

Shooting for The Courtship Formula began on December 1, 2006, and ended May 1, 2007. Post-Production began on April 3, 2007 and is continuing. Lord willing, it will be complete this month, and be sent in to SAICFF before the June 1 early deadline. Below are some pictures from throughout production.

The greenscreen set for the introduction and narration scenes. To light the screen, we used a Lowel RifaLite 500 watt softbox. For my key light, a 500 watt Lowel omni light was used, and 750 watt tota light with reflective umbrella served as my fill light. Another 500 watt omni was used for the back light.

Our "Video Village". We shot the scenes (and the whole documentary) with our Canon XL2 camera. For the greenscreen scenes, we used a teleprompter and two laptops. One controlled the prompter software, EasyReader Lite, and the other ran Serious Magic's DV Rack production studio software, recording everything directly to an external harddrive. (We still recorded to tape as a backup.)

As editing continues, I'll post some screen shots of the chroma keying process. I'll be using Serious Magic's Ultra 2 chroma key software, which I think is the best keying software out there. As a side note, Serious Magic was bought by Adobe some time ago, so DV Rack is now Adobe OnLocation. I'm not sure if Ultra's been renamed or not. I still referred to both pieces of software by their old names, because we have the "Pre-Adobe" versions.
